TOGETHER WITH UKRAINE:
online charity concerts featuring the most famous Ukrainian music works
A grand performance of wonderful and iconic Ukrainian music will be broadcast online to viewers around the world.
In cooperation with the partner “Kontramarka”, Lviv National Opera presents the charity project “TOGETHER WITH UKRAINE” – a series of online concerts of the definitive works of Ukrainian composers and world classics. Spectators worldwide can join the online concerts by purchasing a ticket for the live broadcast of the concerts from Lviv National Opera. Proceeds will be used for charity, support for the Ukrainian people, and culture during the war.
In particular, the funds will be directed to the needs of the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Western Region, which requires the purchase of resuscitation equipment. Every month, modern equipment can save hundreds of lives of our defenders and civilians who have been wounded during the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The main mission of the project is to preserve the national musical heritage and its promotion in the world cultural space. We cannot allow war to take away or destroy our values and creative achievements that have been created for centuries and passed down through the generations. Music should sound and fill with light energy people who live in the paradigm of education and humane values.
The project presentation and the first online broadcast will take place on May 6 at 20:00 (19:00 CET). Under the baton of the chief conductor Ivan Cherednichenko, whose parents were ruthlessly killed by the Russian occupiers in Irpin in March 2022, Lviv National Opera Orchestra will present a great work of symphonic music – Symphony №3 by Borys Lyatoshynsky. The orchestra will also include musicians from other regions of Ukraine who have been forced to leave their homes.
Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshynsky (1895-1968) was persecuted by the Soviet authorities and censorship and suffered from slander and oppression. He wrote his definitive Symphony №3 right after World War II. After the first triumphant performance, the symphony faced severe criticism from Soviet authorities, and the composer was forced to rewrite it partially. The tragic emotional work, which describes the experience of war as a tragedy for the individual and humanity, was inconvenient for the Soviet government and was called “rubbish that needs to be burned.” During the online broadcast, Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Symphony №3 will be performed in the first original edition of 1951.
In the future, the program of online world concerts will feature the most famous symphonic, opera, choral, chamber works of Ukrainian composers, and world classics. In particular, it is the féerie a by Yevhen Stankovych “When the Fern Blooms” (May 20), Spiritual Concerts by Dmytro Bortnyansky (May 28), and instrumental music by Borys Lyatoshynsky (June 2).
Today, Lviv National Opera hosts artists from the regions most damaged by the shelling during the Russian aggression in Ukraine. Therefore, the presentation of works of Ukrainian heritage will unite the best Ukrainian performers and bands from Mariupol, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kyiv, Odesa, and other cities of Ukraine.
The project aims to unite the artistic environment of the world around the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine. Music works and performances by Ukrainian composers will contribute to the establishment of Ukrainian cultural identity in the world and, as a result, will help build solid cultural partnerships. Also, part of the proceeds will support the artists from all over Ukraine who continue their creative work at Lviv National Opera.
Today, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, State Agency of Ukraine for Arts and Art Education, the National Union of Theatre Artists of Ukraine, the artistic environment of Ukraine and leading Ukrainian companies are united in one cultural front created to present and promote Ukrainian culture.
Українська культура, на жаль, має багато прикладів, коли кращі твори мистецтва намагалися знищити або ж заборонити, а їх автори потерпали від наклепів та утисків. Драматичною є історія створення, виконання, а потім через десятиліття – відродження Симфонії №3 Бориса Лятошинського (1895-1968), яка цього тижня вперше виконуватиметься на сцені Львівської національної опери.
Надзвичайний тріумф чекав композитора при першому виконанні Симфонії №3 у 1951 році у Києві: публіка аплодувала стоячи. А втім, були й такі, яких успіх відверто лякав: радянські функціонери на засіданні Спілки композиторів України виголосили, що Симфонія є «мотлохом, який потрібно спалити». Композитора зобов’язали частково переписати твір. Борис Лятошинський передбачав таку реакцію, і не раз згадував у листах стосовно наклепів щодо своєї творчості: «Як композитор я – мертвий, і коли воскресну – не знаю».
Яку ж небезпеку для радянської ідеології несла музика Симфонії №3 Бориса Лятошинського, і яку цінність вона має для української культури?
Симфонія, написана невдовзі після Другої світової війни, містила епіграф «Мир переможе війну». Втім музика її була далекою від прославлення перемоги й зображення «ідеальної» радянської дійсності.
Трагічний емоційний твір, що передає переживання війни як трагедії для особистості та людства, за майстерністю втілення стоїть в одному ряді із найвідомішими драматичними симфоніями світової культури – Г. Малера, Я. Сібеліуса, П. Гіндеміта та Д. Шостаковича.
Втім Симфонію Лятошинського вирізняють її мелодії, які наче проростають із українських фольклорних джерел: чи то з тужливої пісні, чи колядки. Тож музика симфонії вражає своєю драматичністю, трагедією вселенського масштабу, яку пережив саме український народ. Звісно, таке відверте змалювання історичної правди в музиці не могло влаштовувати радянських критиків, і під впливом нищівних оцінок Борис Лятошинський переписав фінал Симфонії №3 на урочисто-помпезний.
Після десятиліть забуття, оригінальна перша редакція твору була відновлена та виконана диригентами Ігорем Блажковим і Володимиром Сіренком. На сцені Львівської національної опери Симфонія №3 Бориса Лятошинського вперше прозвучить у виконанні оркестру театру під орудою диригента, керівника музичної частини Івана Чередніченка.
